The current series of courses in the Information Systems area of emphasis are being phased out.  Each class in this emphasis will be offered one additional time.

New Emphasis - effective Summer 2009

The use of information technology in an organization is pervasive.  Continuous technological advances require an understanding of how to conduct business in a dynamic economic and global climate.  The focus is providing a foundation in the infrastructure, data systems, and communication structures that enable everyone to work in the current and future global business community.  

Students pursuing the Information Systems emphasis complete 9 hours in their area of emphasis beyond Core courses and any required Preparatory courses, plus 6 hours selected from other Areas of Emphasis.

Course Descriptions

INFS 629 DataBases, Data Warehouses and Business Analytics.

    The foundations of this course include database theory and design, data warehousing fundamentals, data mining and business analytics.  This course will consider the practical issues of analysis, selection, implementation and management of these systems.  Alternative designs for data warehouses are critically examined including architectures of distribution, data models and data marts.  Policies for the protection and utilization of the data are discussed.  Current systems that use data warehouses in decision settings are explored.    Prer. INFS 609 or instructor permission

INFS 679 Information Systems Organizational Foundations.

    This course will lay the groundwork for what the I/S function should be doing for the organization.  Students will see how the different functions in a business interact with the I/S function on a process and technical level.  The emphasis is on creating value for the organization.  Broad technical topics will include networking and the overall technology infrastructure of the organization.  Some of the non-technical topics will include supporting the various functions, outsourcing the I/S function and identification of risk and value.    Prer. INFS 609.

OPTM 649 Organizational Skills for Project Management.

    Students learn both theory and practice of virtual teamwork.  Students learn how to adapt communication media to achieve management goals both inside and outside the team.  Additionally, the course emphasizes the need to develop human resources as capital and intellectual assets to effectively manage projects within a dynamic organization.   Prer. OPTM 639, any 600 level MBA course, or instructor permission.
