Internships are integral to preparing a student for a career in management's of a sports associated organization. Internship experiences provide a primary source of knowledge, help build confidence, and strengthen the resume for future employment.
Sport Management students participate in two formal internships and have hands-on activities built into select classes within the program.
*Freshman Seminar in Sport Management: As part of this class students will spend 18-20 hours during the semester working with an organization such as the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Students will receive a basic orientation to the organization and then be engaged in entry-level activities consistent with the management needs of that organization.
*Junior Year Internship: During a student's junior year they will work with one of our Sport Management partner organizations on prearranged assignments. Internships may occur during a specific semester or be spread out over the year in order to accommodate the needs of both student and organization alike. (3 credits)
*Senior Year Internship: Similar in nature to the Junior Year Internship, students will work with one of our Sport Management partner organization on a prearranged assignment. However, during the Senior Year Internship it is expected that student will be given greater levels of responsibility and accountability. Internships may occur during a specific semester or be spread out over the year in order to accommodate the needs of both student and organization alike. (4 credits)
All internships are completed under the direction and guidance of the Sport Management program faculty and staff and senior managers within our partner organizations. Before an assignment is made, faculty internship advisors will review the proposed internship with senior managers from our partner organization to insure that the request is appropriate both in terms of content and time commitment.
Our partner organizations reserve the right to interview students prior to an internship and in the case of multiple applications the right to rank order their offers of internships.
Students participating in internships are expected to operate in a professional manner with the highest levels of integrity. Students participating in internships are expected to dress and behave in a manner consistent with the standards of the organization to which they are assigned and must recognize that future internships with these organizations for both themselves and new students to the program are dependent upon the performance and behaviors demonstrated during their internships.
